About

The Chawkandi Tombs, located about 27km east of Karachi, are exquisitely carved, ancient tombs built in the 15th to 18th century by Jokhio and Baluch tribes that inhabited the area at the time.

The exact reason why the tombs are named chawkandi remains unclear. One popular theory is that the name comes from the little village of chawkandi nearby. Another theory attributes it to a word in the Sindhi language, chaw = four, and kundhi = corner, chawkundi thus referring to the four pillars supporting the umbrella shaped dome over the tomb and would apply to all tombs having the same construction.

In modern times these tombs have come to reflect a kind of identity of Sindh and particularly of Karachi. Thus the name Chawkandi for this blog – a place for discourse and discussions, of celebrating the rich culture, history, traditions and lifestyle of Sindh and its diverse inhabitants, and how we can – together – make it a better place.
